Hello Friends – Welcome to 2016!
A new year is before us with:

Hundreds of empty spots on the calendar to be filled up with grand adventures.

The opportunity to renew good intentions - a reminder to set goals to become the awesome mom, loyal friend, thoughtful neighbor, exciting sweetheart, devoted daughter, or all-round amazing woman each of you want to be.
One of my favorite presents I got this year was from my wonderful mother. It was a list of 12 favorite mothering/homemaking skills that she discovered while joyfully raising her 11 children.
I want to share one of those fantastic ideas here with you.
“Master's Program”
In Mom's words:
“Our children earned their Master's Degrees in bread baking, changing a diaper (including washing your hands afterward), washing dishes, sweeping a room, cleaning the toilet, etc. Each “course” had a list of requirements to accomplish in order to earn their degree in that field of study. When each item was “mastered”, they received a Degree certificate and a candy bar of their choice. They signed the diploma along with us. Not only was it a way to honor their hard efforts, it was also a way to ensure the job was accomplished correctly, and could be completed again in the future.
Example:
Bread Baking;
*Demonstrate how to turn on and off the wheat grinder and grind a bucket full of wheat.
*Using the bread machine, read and follow the recipe: Add ingredients, Mix, grease pans, and shape into loaves.
*Show how to preheat the oven and to use pot holders when putting the bread in and out of the oven.”
My brother, not-so-fondly recalls that once you had earned your Master's Degree in anything you always had to say, “Yes”, when asked to help out. All of sudden it was not so fun to be a Masters of Diaper Changing.
I am so grateful to be surrounded by you – my wonderful friends in the Deseret Homeschool Association. I have loved spending moments with you – witnessing the amazing mothering you are giving your children, seeing the service you happily offer to support, lift, and motivate each other, taking to heart the sound wise advice you share with me about curriculum, discipline, and meeting life's challenges. I have watched as hard moments have come to each of you and you have met those difficult demands with determination, grace, and beauty. You are truly an inspiration to me.
During my growing up years my sweet mama shared with me that even though there are many things that happen in life that you can't choose – you can choose your attitude.
This year I challenge you to find Joy in the Journey. Each of our journeys will be different but each of us can find joy.
I am the one with the amazingly awesome bangs, holding a clarinet and closing my eyes in the back. :)

Monthly Board Game Day at All About Games in Boise
Join us THIS Friday, January 8th, at 1:00 p.m.
All about Games, 7079 W Overland Rd, Boise
We play quality strategy board games at All About Games on Overland in Boise.
Older participants will play games like Settlers of Catan, Agricola, Basari, Can't Stop, Walnut Grove, Dominion, Blokus, Pandemic, Ticket To Ride, Quarto, Hansa, Abalone, Bananagrams, Loot, Coda, RobyRally and 10 Days in the USA. Younger participants can play games like Sleeping Queens, Zimmbo, Number Chase, Buggo, Chickyboom, Catch the Match, Rat-A-Tat Cat, Sherlock and Three of a Crime.
Each gathering is loosely structured with each child being able to play any game present. Available games are from the 200+ titles on All About Games demo shelves. No sign-up or registration is required; just show up! You do not have to come every month, but your kids will learn more games and make more friends if they participate more frequently. A day or two before each gathering, we do a roll call on Facebook so folks can see how many children near their own children's ages are present. We usually have about 40-45 kids.
This is NOT a drop-off event. Parents or guardians must stay on-site. You are welcome to bring children who are not your own or send your children with a friend, but whoever brings them is responsible for supervising them during the event. Moms (and Dads) can gather on one side of the room and chat, play their own game, see demos of other games, or browse the store.

Homeschool Snow Tubing:
Tubing registration is open to everyone! I have reserved the entire Bogus Basin tubing hill for the homeschool community! The late afternoon time slot means that maybe Daddy can make it, too!
Date: Friday, January 29th
Time: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Place: Bogus Basin's Pepsi Goldrush Tubing Hill
Cost: $12/person tubing
Payment due: January 22, 2016 (1 week BEFORE the event)
Age minimum: none
Age maximum: none!
Height minimum: 36"
Weight maximum: 250lb

If we don't get enough folks to pay the fee, I will have to cancel the event. (This is the fourth year and that hasn't happened yet - or even come close to happening. We did cancel for weather once when Bogus cancelled on us.) In that event, I will of course give everyone their money back. After January 22nd, I'll have paid your money to Bogus, so cannot issue refunds. You can transfer your spots to other people before the start of tubing, but let me know they have permission to use your tickets. Tubing tickets may NOT be passed around between individuals ON the hill. Payment can be made via a mailed check, cash in person or PayPal (friends & family so I don't get charged fees!). Please make sure you get a confirming email back from me, too. If you do not hear back from me (give me a day or two!), contact me. Every year, I end up with a waiting list, so register soon.
You personally do not have to tube with your children, but you are responsible for supervising or arranging for supervision for them on the hill. This is not a drop-off event. There are a few picnic tables at the top of the hill that you can hang out on. If you have young children, I recommend that you do tube with them as they never seem to think to clear the run as fast as they should! If you are not tubing yourself, you do not need to pay for a ticket for yourself.
The tubing hill is directly across the street from the resort. The parking for the tubing hill is a wee bit past the main, lower Bogus parking lot and on the left. The drive up to Bogus from downtown Boise takes about 45 minutes in good weather. We have a very distinct reserved time slot. If you're late, you simply will have less than two hours of tubing. Our group will be cleared out at 5:00 p.m. sharp.
Bogus is generally colder than Boise, so dress accordingly. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen because that reflective snow will get ya!

Homeschool Art Class - 5-week hands-on course covering the basics of oil painting
Leah Mong has been teaching students of all ages painting classes for over 12 years. She has a Master's Degree in Education and a Bachelors in Fine Arts and has a special place in her heart for homeschoolers. She is offering this course for 11-18 year olds on Wednesdays from 2:00-3:30, January 13 - February 10. Cost is $100 for entire course – this includes all supplies!! Ski/Snowboard Lessons at Bogus Basin
As most of you know, we the Vogt Family, are volunteer coordinators of the Friday Ski/Board lesson program at Bogus Basin. This program is for any student that is available to ski/board on the Friday(10:00am) lesson days. Registration documents and forms are posted on Google Drive. Link is included below. There are day pass and rental discounts available for parents who are interested in skiing or boarding. This information is posted on Google Drive as well.
There will also be some free Chaperone passes available for any parent/family members over 18. These include a day lift ticket and gear rental, if needed. Chaperones do not join the lesson groups, they just help direct students to rental gear pick-up and lesson start area. At 10am they are free to enjoy the mountain. These will be given out on a lottery type basis. If you are interested, please include a registration form completed with your students. If I do not have a completed registration form I cannot place your name on the lottery list. If you have any questions please send a message or call.
Bogus LifeSports: Lessons are available for Beginner - Advanced , students ages 7-18. Lessons are conducted by instructors from the Bogus Basin Ski/Board School. All participants receive a Full Day Slope Access Pass (good from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.) Note: If you choose a lesson package with rentals, your rental equipment must be returned by 3:00 p.m. Season long lease equipment is available from Black Diamond sports at Bogus Basin, Greenwoods, Ridgeline Specialty Sports, or McU Sports.
This is a Friday(10:00 am) lesson program that consists of two sessions – one in January and one in February. You must register for an entire session (3 Fridays). You may, of course, register for both sessions.
Cost: $25 per lesson day(Day Pass, Rental Gear, 1hr 45min Group Lesson) or $15 per lesson day(Day Pass,1hr 45min Group Lesson)

Healthy Homeschoolers p.e. co-op has a few openings.
We meet on Thursdays from 1:30-3:00 and switch sports every few weeks. Ages 4-13. This month is Crossfit at Snake River Crossfit in Nampa. You are free to come try us out for $5/child this Thursday (please R.S.V.P. to me) or you can secure a spot by paying a $25 registration fee and $10/month/child.
