Election/Volunteer Meeting Notes:
For those of you who missed our election/volunteer meeting in May, we met at Macy Huberty's home in Meridian, on May 12. We had a lively "end of year" celebration, with lots of chocolate and other goodies, a couple of ice breaker activities, and of course, a changing of the guard for next season.
We are grateful for Ruth Hansen, our 2015/2016 president for her warm, encouraging leadership this past year, and for her dedication to DHSA. THANK YOU! Ruth is off on new and exciting adventures this summer and we wish her all the best!
We thank our members for hosting and attending Mothers' Meetings and parties, planning field trips, for donating Box Tops, craft supplies, and for sharing their time and other resources. We appreciate everything!

The response has been wonderful and the discussions lively and engaging! Our Facebook community is a great place to connect with other homeschoolers in your area, ask and answer questions, learn about or arrange playdates, park days, field trips, and be inspired by the projects and ideas folks are sharing. We talk about everything from learning styles to curriculum choices to how to battle burn out and overcome discouragement. Our members are passionate, knowledgeable, and eager to share!
We plan to expand our outreach by offering our Mothers’ Meetings in real time (or nearly so) online this year. We are currently working on the logistics and are excited to make DHSA more accessible to our members! Treasure Valley Commonwealth Orchestra Ensemble Recital

Our small ensemble has been together for 1 year. We hope to grow into a larger group in the next year. This is a great opportunity to meet the students and the director. We accept musical students of all skill levels.

Principles of Liberty Book Club
This dynamic and engaging book group is dedicated to studying the principles of liberty. We meet once a month and invite parents and grandparents and other adults to join us and to bring any of your mature teens. We encourage and thrive on the perspectives of persons from different generations and life experiences.
The next book discussion will be held Saturday June 4th at 7:00 p.m. We will discuss the 5th and 6th principle from the 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen, and Frederic Bastiat’s The Law.

Foothills Learning Center Second Saturday Series: Spring Songbirds
This is the last in the series of free, family-oriented nature programs offered at the Jim Hall Foothills Learning Center!

Early June migration is over, but it's still the peak of song bird season for many species in Boise. Come and learn the basics of birding from Kathy McCoy, long time birder and Golden Eagle Audubon member. Kathy will introduce you to our resident birds and migrant species who visit each spring and early summer. Then head outside and put your skills to the test. Kathy and other volunteer birders will be here to lead small groups outside looking and listening for birds. You can also make a bird feeder from repurposed materials, try your hand at some bird art, and more.
Summer Teen Ballroom Dance Classes:
This is an intro summer class open to all teens, both home schooled and pubic. I am testing the waters to see if I will get enough interest from the homeschooling community to open a class this fall for a home school only class on Thursday afternoons. Once you pay for this class, I will email a registration for to you and you can clarify if your son or daughter is home schooled. If I can get enough interest from committed individuals I can look into opening up a regular syllabus/choreography/performance class this fall for home schooled high school students.
I hope we can!
Six week teen summer intro series runs June 16 - July 28. I need three boys and six total to open. This class is an introduction to see if there is enough interest to open a regular class during the school year. We will spend a few days with basic syllabus material and end our six weeks with some fun swing choreography! If you are going to be gone one week or two this summer, you won't be too far behind as we always do a heafty review of previous material each week.
Due to a great lot of interest and too many no-shows in the past, I am requiring those interested to commit to pre-paying with an online commitment. If we don't get enough by midnight of June 14, I will refund your credit card. I have had many show interest, but few have actually committed. Please help us open this class with pre payment.
World Refugee Day Celebration
Boise’s World Refugee Day Celebration will take place Saturday, June 18th from 10:30 am-12:00 pm at City Hall and 1:00 pm-5:00 pm at Ann Morrison Park.
World Refugee Day is an internationally-celebrated cultural event that has become a tradition for thousands of residents in Boise. It is unique in that it showcases the cultures of individuals from around the world, but also acts as an educational tool to help Boiseans learn more about their new neighbors and the plight of refugees worldwide.
Because the populations coming to Idaho are often minority groups, World Refugee Day is an opportunity to learn about lesser known people and their traditions, and to gain an appreciation for where they are coming from. It is through celebrations like this that fear and ignorance are countered and a more welcoming community is formed.

Idaho Youth Ranch presents: The Ranch Readers Program (Ongoing, not just through the summer!)
A book is a thrift store treasure — especially a free book! The Idaho Youth Ranch is offering a free book to any child (up to age 17) who visits an Idaho Youth Ranch thrift store.
Each free book comes with a special Ranch Readers bookmark. When you finish the book, write the name of the book on your bookmark and bring it (the bookmark, you keep the book!) back to the store, and we'll give you another free book (valued at $1.95 or less) and a stamp on your bookmark!
Every child who reads five free books and fills up their Ranch Readers bookmark with all five stamps can come back to the store for a special prize--and a new Ranch Readers bookmark to start the process all over again.

Box Tops for Education:
You know those little pink tags on top of cereal, huggies, ziplocs, and hundreds of other items that say "10 cents for your school?" DHSA collects them and uses them to fund our Opening and Closing Socials and to subsidize other activities, such as our parties, science, history, and literary fairs, keeping them free or low cost! You can bring them to any Mother's Meeting or most activities and pass them on to Janet Cox, DHSA Treasurer, or any other member of the DHSA Board (who will pass them on to Janet for you!)
Collecting them is easy. I pointed them out to my kids and they keep an eye out for them on packages before they throw things in the trash. I have a ziploc bag taped to the inside of a cupboard that they drop them into. You can also ask grandparents or friends to save them for us. Stores like Albertsons, also sometimes offer Bonus Box Tops which print at the register, like a receipt from the catalina machine. These have a bonus code that you can register online and are often worth $5. You can register and enter them yourself and designate the money to go to DHSA. (List your school as Deseret Home School Association in Nampa, Idaho—that is how our organization is registered.) You can also turn them in at Mother's Meetings and we will enter them, but be aware that these often have expiration dates that come faster than regular box tops.
For those who would like to support DHSA, but find that they don’t use Box Tops for Education products, monetary donations in any amount are humbly and gratefully accepted!
